To Be a Witch

  • Sep. 28th, 2009 at 9:53 AM
witchandcat

I am posting this blog entry from Hecate's Cauldron because I strongly believe in what she is saying here and want to spread this wise advice to everyone.  It should be required reading.

To Be A Witch

You are not a witch because you buy witchy stuff from eBay (much as we all love a bit of witchy stuff). You are not a witch because you wear a pentacle, or get a tattoo, or buy and read books on witchcraft from Amazon.com or from a cute feminist bookstore in your town (much as we all love to read some witchy books). Stop allowing your lust to substitute for a daily practice.

You are not a witch because you wear robes or elven jewelry or because you have black fingernail polish or because you burn incense in your apartment or because you learn to read tarot or palms or tea leaves. Stop allowing your physical image and your fear of death to substitute for a relationship with the divine.

Yes, Younger Child loves all of those things. But Younger Child, alone, cannot make you a witch.

You are not a witch because Lady Something Luna Something Hawk Something Ravensomething Moonglow pronounces you a witch or because you complete some on-line "mystery school" course. You are not a witch because you've been scourged or annointed with oil or because you've said some sacred words. You are not a witch because you've gotten the five-fold kiss. Stop allowing other people to exercise power over.

You can BECOME a witch with no paraphanelia at all, just by going outside under the full, or dark, or quarter or half or three-quarter Moon, or under the sun, or at dawn, or at dusk, or whenever, and saying, with intention, "I am a witch. I am a witch. I am a witch." But in order to BE a witch, you must do more. Otherwise, you, as a witch, will fade, rather quickly, into nothing.

In order to BE a witch, you must help to turn the wheel. You must sit down daily with the Goddess and the gods and develop relationship. How scary is that? You must ground. Also, scary, especially when done daily. You must be present, as a witch, as often and as frequently as possible. Ditto on the scary. You must do the work involved in developing a relationship with the land, the watershed, the trees, the herbs, the wildlife, the rocks -- everything -- in your sacred space. Again, scary. You must change the world with magic, challenge those in power, heal the sick and powerless, provide the imaginal and charged image of the wild woman living at the liminal space between village and wood. You must do what is dangerous, you must see and worship the divine in the mundane, you must be willing to allow magic to creep into the modern world through the temporal port of your own warm human, bloody body. It's all as scary as shit if you actually commit to doing it on a daily basis and not just when you feel like it.

It's neither as easy, nor as "fun!" to be a witch as many modern people imagine. Mostly, to be a witch is work, work, work, not necessarily exciting nor technicolor work, although, Goddess knows, on occassion . . . . To be a witch is to wake up every morning, even the mornings when you need to dash into work, and to do a witch's work of relationship, grounding, physical presence. To be a witch is to stop and turn the wheel, even when a million "mundane" concerns call out to you. To be a witch is not to own stuff nor to read stuff nor to wear stuff nor to go to stuff. Sorry. To be a witch is to commit to work, difficult, repetitive, spiritual work and to do it over, and over, and over and from one season to the next and to the next and to the next.

Are you a witch? I am trying to be.

How true these words and they should be required reading for everyone who contemplates being a witch.

Sunday - Sun Day - this is the Day of Intent, Creation and Renewal...The ruling goddess for today is Hera, a creative deity. The moon is waxing so perhaps a Sunday Crystel Spell for
Success will be in order for today.  This comes from a book of Ellen Dugnan's - "7 Days of Magick".
"If you enjoy working with crystals, try this natural magick spell for ambition and success. The charms and spells that would complement this magickal day of the sun are ones for personal
achievements of any kind. Look over the spell carefully before performing it. Either set up this spell outside or facing a sunny window. Opportune times of the day to work this sunny spell are sunrise or noon.  (Hmmm,   my weather can throw a bit of damper on this as it is a rainy cloudy day, and it is almost past the opportune times to do it - sunrise or noon, oh well)
Gather each one of the following: a small piece of amber, a tiger's eye tumbled stone, and a quartz crystal point. With a safe, flat surface to set up on, place a yellow candle and a candleholders in the center, and arrange the stones in a ring around the candle. Have a lighter or matches handy to light the candle.
Speak the following spell three times: 'Around a yellow candle I create a ring, Choose tiger's-eye, amber and quartzx, it's just the thing, I call the god Helios for drive and success,Today's ambitions and career goals he will bless.'
Close the spell by saying:  'For the good of all, with harm to none, By the sun and stones, this spell is done.'
Allow the candle to burn out on its own. Please remember not to leave your burning candle unattended. Pocket the sun-kissed stones and keep them with you, in your pocket or purse for a week.

Oh I see in my Seasons of the Witch datebook that it is mentioned that there are minor magickal energies for motivation and personal finances rites/spells. So this could boost some of the power of your spell in spite of the timing being a bit off and perhaps your weather too. You could compliment your spell with a tarot card or two that associated with Sunday/Sun.  They are Ace of Wands; The Sun (of course) , and The Chariot..

This morning while looking through some of my books, I came across a prayer that I had written down on a sticky memo and put into a book.  The source of this prayer I have completely forgotten about....  but I really enjoyed finding this little prayer again.  I must have saved it because it seems to fit so well into my early morning risings and twilight observations that are part of my spirituality.

Communing With Mother

"Let me hear your wisdom each morning
in the wind tunings of the maple
outside my bedroom window.

Let me honor you each evening as the sky bleeds
then deepens to the unknowable
well of endings and beginnings.

I rise up chanting,
circling -
conjuring a lifetime of Mother
communion to last a moment. "

And so I see in my Goddess Companion book that today's essay is about giving thanks to the Mother.... and this is an good time to include something on giving our gratitude to the Mother of us
all, this time of when the harvest is being gathered in.

"Of her I sing, the All-Mother
old and rock-hard and beautiful.

Of her I sing, the nourisher,
she upon whom everything feeds.

Of Gaia I sing, Whoever you are,
wherever you are, she feeds you

from her sacred treasury of life.
Bountiful harvests, beautiful

children, the fullness of life:
these are her gifts. Praise her.
__ Homeric hymn to Gaia

Gratitude is an important part of real worship. Yet all too often our relationship to the divine takes the form either of awestruck adoration at the immensity of creation or of helpless petitioning for what we feel is lacking in our lives. Offering prayers of thanks is usually no longer part of our daily meals. We consume, often mindlessly, the products of our great earth mother, chattering about the distractions of our lives as we do so. With no specific ritual of thanksgiving, it often slips from our awareness.

Yet to be thankful for the great gifts we are given is to be truly alive to the richness of life. If we actually looked at our food each time we ate - savoring it with all our senses rather than simply consuming it without consciousness - how much savor we would find in even the simplest food! And if we greeted each day by noticing and acknowledging the beauty of the world, how much pleasure would this gratitude give us!
[From "The Goddess Companion" by Patricia Monaghan]

Reading through this essay I realize that I've developed the habit of thanking the Goddess often during my day when some small good thing happens.... like when I arrive back home again safely
after the day's trips here and there.  I spontaneously thank the Goddess when I see something beautiful that She has called my attention to subconsciously.  It gives more meaning to being aware of
these simple pleasures that we often take for granted.

It is sad to see this happening yet again, perhaps still....

At http://hecatedemetersdatter.blogspot.com/

she calls our attention to the that witch hunts and witch killings are now global and spreading.  Another site in which this is posted about is: http://wildhunt.org/blog/2009/09/witch-hunts-are-now-an-international-epidemic.html

There it says:  Witch Hunts Are Now An International Epidemic

Yesterday a coalition of U.N. officials, NGOs, and representatives from affected countries addressed the United Nations asking for governments to face the full extent of witch hunts across the world. Far from being a localized phenomenon in “primitive” or isolated villages, witch hunts and witch killings are now global in nature and spreading.

“Murder and persecution of women and children accused of being witches is spreading around the world and destroying the lives of millions of people, experts said Wednesday … “This is becoming an international problem — it is a form of persecution and violence that is spreading around the globe,” Jeff Crisp of the U.N.’s refugee agency UNHCR told a seminar organized by human rights officials of the world body.”

"Some religious practitioners make a living from exorcising alleged witches and charging exorbitant fees to those who request the ritual. In Foxcroft’s experience, the most vulnerable members of society – children and the elderly – are often the victims of these accusations.”

“Witchcraft is still widely practiced in many countries in Africa by witchdoctors who often use human body parts in their spells. Some witchdoctors employ gangs of young men to attack and kill victims, often young children, for their body parts, which are frequently removed while the victim is still alive. An estimated 300 people are killed each year in South Africa alone as a result of this practice. But horrific though this practice is, it is only part of the problem. In Nigeria, in both the Muslim North and the Christian South, witch hunts are not uncommon and this has led to a second form of abuse. Some unscrupulous pastors, many linked to Pentecostal churches, have a lucrative trade in making unfounded accusations of witchcraft against young children. [The pastors then agree to “cure” the witches for a substantial fee. Many children are being ostracized and abandoned by their parents as a result of these accusations.]“

These Christian pastors aren’t isolated to Africa, they tour churches in America bragging about their battles with the occult, and have established ministries in Ireland and the UK. Commingling with an increasing anti-occult fervor among some Western Christian groups. Meanwhile, actual modern Pagan communities in places like India and South Africa are facing the possible ramifications of intensifying witch-hunts and witch persecutions.

Hecate's says in her blog: "This is a serious problem and it calls for serious actions. As Jason notes, signing a few internet petitions isn't going to cut it. I'd like to call on the Pagan community to -- in addition to serious political action, donations, and pressure on our own elected officials -- plan to do some magic on this topic at Yule, when we turn from the dark to the light. What can you do --as a solitary, a member of a coven or grove, a worker of magic, a shaman, a worshipper of the old gods, a priestess or priest of a public ritual, as one who moves between the worlds where what you do between them affects them all -- what can you do to put a stop to this modern day slaughter of witches and those labeled "witch"? If you plan an action at Yule, please share it in comments; if we can collect enough ideas, I'll do a separate post on the topic a bit closer to the Sabbat."

Sun In Libra

Sun in Libra

Yesterday at the time of the Autumn Equinox the Sun moved into the Sign of Libra - a Cardinal Air Sign.  As the seventh sign of the zodiac, Libra represents the seventh stage in the evolution of man and his place in the universe. The first six signs represent man's attention turned inward to understand and develop his individuality and position in the cosmos. The rest of the signs represent his attention turned outward to humanity as a whole. Libra is not merely the sign of partnership, it is the sign of other people in general. Libra is the balance between the individual and society. To attain the understanding man seeks in Libra, there must be a compromise between the passion and the intellect. The physical world must come to terms with the nonphysical world. The objectivity of judgment needed for these tasks is characteristic of the Libran temperament. Un-evolved Librans can be cold and unemotional or unable to make decisions. But this is not true of mature Librans in whom such traits merely represent attempts to reach true objectivity.     To read more of this article go to:

From: http://www.dailyscopes.com/libra-sun.php

And from Kate West's "The Real Witches' Year":

Libra is an AIr sign relating to the world of thought, ideas, communications and humanity. It is also a Cardinal sign briinging eagerness, initiative, action and impatience.

Librans are generally self-expression, communicative, mentally alert, and extrovert. The tend to be charming,m easy-going, diplomatic and compromising. They are happiest in harmonious company, preferring to comform and to avoid conflict and dissension. Librans are typified by the scales; they like to weigh things in the balance. They are intelligent and capable of seeing all sides of an issue, however this can lead to indecisiveness, and sometimes to misunderstandings through doing what they think others expect. Librans enjoy bringing people together and often have a strong artistic or creative streak. They are actuely perceptive about those they love and are often forgiving of faults, whether real or perceived. They tend to bottle up their feelings for fear of 'upsetting the balance.'  On the negative side they can lack self-confidence, be fault-finding, indecisive, frivolous and shallow.

While the Sun is in their sign Librans should be particularly wary of their tendency to compare both themselves and others to some kind of ideal, as this is bound to lead to disappointments. It is a good time for them to exprss themselves artistically. Those of other signs will also find this a good time for artistic endeavours, soucial activities and for considering decision which involve many positive and negative components.

Autumn Equinox - Mabon

AUTUMN EQUINOX

Autumn is well-named Fall, as it is the time when greens give way to a glorious array of yellows, golds, oranges and reds before the wind takes
the leaves to the ground. Autumn is the season of winds, the harbingers of
the storms of Winter. It is the time of harvest and plenty, when the crops
ripen, before the hardship of Winter.

Even if we do not tend the land to produce our own food it is a time of harvest. This is the time when we should look to what we have achieved: the tasks and projects we have completed, the successes we have had. Even where not all has turned out as hoped for, there is often much which has been achieved.
As the farmer is setting aside seed for next year, so we too can sort out the seeds of ideas for new things to begin. Much like we did in the Spring this is a time for sorting through our lives, discarding that which is finished and preparing to start afresh.

Take time to consider and sort through your life. Celebrate your own harvest, whether it is a spring of herb grown on the windowsill or a friend you have helped through abad time, and mark every achievement great and small. For each collect a seed or nut and create a string of them. Sunflower seeds are good for this. Paint each in a color which reminds you of the good things in year and place it in a prominent place where you can remind yourself of the positive aspects of life.
[From Kate West's ""The Real Witches' Year"]

FALL EQUINOX - We'Moon's essay

A momentry state of precise equilibrium mirrors the Spring Equinox (do your remember what you doing at the Spring Equinox?), but instead of the exuberance of spring, we experience a melancholy represented by the crescent-shaped harvest sickle, that ancient female symbol marking women's role in agriculture and the cutting of cord after birth. Harvest time warns us to gather in the fruits and nuts, pick the vegetables from gardens and fields, cut grains, and enter into planning for some surplus to get us through the winter. Mother Earth's abundance could be a metaphor for the 'gift economy', and alternative economic model developed by femininist philosopher, Genevieve Vaughn, reflecting ancient matriarchal values that constrast with the 'exchange exonomy' dominating the world today.

Go into nature (or your backyard), and gather things to make a 'fetish' or 'talisman' from fibers, shells, feathers and found objects. Tie the parts together making prayers with each knot, binding energies in and shaping it into the form of an animal spirit or doll. Let this artifact remind you to turn within yourself and give thanks for what you have harvested this year. How about making a contribution of food or cash to yourn local food bank!

She posted this poem by Updike:

     September
The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze."

  with this picture:

First of all, the veils that began, incrementally, to thin on Litha now get demonstrably thinner every day and you can feel the rapid progress. ....Mabon feels, in very many ways, like the beginning of, or the prequel to, Samhein.  http://hecatedemetersdatter.blogspot.com/     From blog entry:   Mabon And Living In Relationship With The Land

She begins that blog entry with this:

"There are eight Wiccan Sabbats each year: Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lughnasadh, Mabon, and Samhein. I admit that Mabon is one of the ones that has often felt less "witchy" and significant to me. It's sometimes called "The Witches Thanksgiving," which sort of makes it sound like a September version of the American Thanksgiving holiday, but one that falls too early to have that lets-eat-a-lot-because-seriously-people-there's-frost-and-shit-out-there-and-you-know-a-hard-rain-is-gonna-fall feeling that gives American Thanksgiving it's real energetic push. The new lunar cycle has begun

It is the second day of the new lunar cycle which is lunar tree cycle of Muin/Vine.  In my Seasons of the Witch datebook this morning it is
noted that there are Major magickal energies for doing spells or rites for Justice.  The correspondences are the Element of Air; the color
white; the tarot card Justice and the rune Twaz.  A little verse is also written out on today's page:

"White winged Goddess, Daughter of Night
Powerfulo njudge of strong and right
Sweet Nemesis of my enemy be
Restore what has been taken from me."

Also this is season of the Eleusinian Mysteries.....  these are one of the greatest rituals of the ancient world and was celebrated annually in Greece
at the small town of Eleusis near Athens. This a part of the mystery religion of Demeter and Persphone and drew thousands of participants each
year. Perhaps as many as a million people were initiated into the mysteries over hundreds of years, in ceremonies that would last over many days
during the period of the autumnal equinox.   What happened at those initiations? We do not know. The ceremonies were secret, and none of the
hundreds of thousands of initiates ever broke the vow.

New Moon happens today - the Crone moon withdraws making way for the Maiden moon - creative fire strives towards a goal that has not yet found expression. We are faced with
possibilities from which we have yet to choose.  In the blog A Pagan Tapestry she re-posted her entry on a New Moon ritual and an activity that you can do on your own.....
This activity is this:  Take your notebook and write something along the lines of:
I will manifest these things that I desire and need in my life and I will do so without harm to anyone else.

Then begin to write down what you need to create in your life. It can be a few things or many. Large or small, tangible or not.   .....
And then on the full moon take your notebook and cross off any items that have manifested in your life since the new moon. On the next new moon create a new list, leaving off the things that have already arrived. Do not just cross off and add to the old list, each new moon write down the new list.

Now this doesn't have to be a major long list or things of major importance to do or make major changes in your life - for the first time you do this, try putting on small things that are more
likely to accomplished.  Then when you check back in at the Full Moon - see what a difference these small changes/things have done for you.

Here is entire ritual from:  http://www.apagantapestry.blogspot.com/

repeating New Moon ritual...

If this looks familiar....it's because you read this blog! This is the same ritual that I posted for last month's New Moon. It is a recurring ritual that I am going to do for a few months. New Moon is on September 18

You will need:

One candle to honor the Goddess in her new moon, blue or white is nice, any color is fine. I have a large pale blue/green candle that I use for all moon rituals.

Incense or sage for cleansing the area.

A small unused notebook and a pen.

Four items to honor the elements.
I sometimes use:
a small bottle of sand for the element of earth
a feather for the element of air
a red candle for the element of fire
a small cup of water for the element of water

When I am in a candle mood I use candles for the elements:
brown or green for earth
yellow or pink for air
red or orange for fire
blue or white for water

Cleanse the area with incense or sage. I create sacred space by simply grounding and centering and visualizing an area around myself filled with energy, closed to random or chaotic spirits and open only to those I invite.

Call the Elements.
I start with Earth. If you are using candles, light them as you call each Element.
Calling them can be as simple as 'I call the Element of Earth to attend and add energy to this sacred space' or as elaborate as you wish.

After calling the Elements, take a moment to honor Goddess, ask her to look favorably on this ritual that you offer up to her and light the candle for her.

Take a few minutes to sit quietly. Reach out to the Elements for additional energy and power. Fill the space around you with their power and energy and reflect on the new moon as an opportunity for new beginnings. An opportunity that we are offered over and over again.

Take your notebook and write something along the lines of:
I will manifest these things that I desire and need in my life and I will do so without harm to anyone else.

Then begin to write down what you need to create in your life. It can be a few things or many. Large or small, tangible or not.

Concentrate on manifesting these things in your life without harming anyone else.

Release the energy that you have created with this work and send it out into the universe to do your bidding.

Thank the Goddess for her presence in your life and put out her candle.

Thank the Elements for loaning you their energy and ask them to return to their own realms, putting out their candles (if any).

Bring yourself back to normal time/space, ground the energy creating your sacred space.
_____________________________

On the full moon take your notebook and cross off any items that have manifested in your life since the new moon. On the next new moon create a new list, leaving off the things that have already arrived. Do not just cross off and add to the old list, each new moon write down the new list.

I am  interested in the Dark Moon phase, which a lot of people refer to as being the New Moon phase.  I place a difference between them even neither phase is really visible to most of
us in the skies.  The New Moon to me is when the Moon 'turns the corner' to becoming a waxing moon and while this is also done at a time when we cannot see the Moon, I do sense there is
a difference in the energies coming from the Moon.  This article below is from a book I have, "Mysteries of Dark Moon" by Demetra George, and it gives us some thoughts to be having on
this time of the cycle.  There is another book focused on the Dark Moon time, and is one by Gail Wood, "Sisters of the Dark Moon".  It is another one I have I in the past I have used it to do
Dark Moon rituals.  I believe there is an updated version out now.

Dark of the Moon - The Dark of the Moon (or Dark Moon) is traditionally the last three days of the Lunar cycle, immediately preceding the New Moon, and the time when the night sky  is notably absent the presence of the Moon. George [1] notes that: “The earliest peoples understood that the power of life lay in the darkness of the moon.” “The purpose of the dark phase of any cycle is that of transition between the death of the old and the birth of the new. The dark time is a time of retreat, of healing, and of dreaming of the future.” i.e. the fallow times preceding outbursts of creativity and growth.

“Most of us do not realize we all have many dark phase times in our lives, and that these are naturally occurring periods in any life cycle. We fail to understand that endings are the precursors to new beginnings; thus when our life rhythms move us into and through these dark phases, we are ignorant of what is actually happening.” [1] It is the grandeur of Death and Rebirth, not merely an ending with the proverbial ride off into the sunset.

“The dark phase of the cyclical process is a phase of healing and renewal rather than one of fear and unknowing; a time of mystery, wisdom, and healing power -- all gifts of the Dark Moon Goddess.” [1]

“There is less energy available for outer activities and meeting the expectations of others, because the purpose of the dark phase is for focusing on the inner dimensions of our bodies and minds. If we can learn to attune ourselves to the natural rhythms of ebb and flow in our lives, we can use the intrinsic function of the dark times for healing and renewal. When we resist this inward motion in our psyche, then anxiety, stress, and fear are more likely to take hold of our emotions.” [1]

“The Triple Moon Goddess, in her new, full, and dark phases, was a model for the feminine nature in her entirety as maiden, mother, and crone. In her original worship the Dark Goddess, as the third aspect of this lunar trilogy, was honored, loved, and accepted for her wisdom and for her mystery teachings of renewal.” [1]
Spells: Healing, renewal, psychic spells. A good time to meditate on the inner self.

Mabon and crossing the threshold

We are drawing closer and closer to the Autumn Equinox and Mabon..... and the Celtic Spirit essay this morning is about a favorite
subject of mine that is appropriate to this season..... thresholds. Therefore I am going to post the essay here and ask you to remember that doing this Mercury Retrograde that we are wise to 'reflect' on our past actions and what we can learn from them.

The Seasonal Thresholds

"This has been our way: Spring for plowing and sowing,
Summer for strengthening the crop;
Autumn for grain's ripness and for reaping,
Winter for consuming its goodess."
___ Cath Madge Tuired, from Caitlin Matthews,
"The Celtic Book of Days" (trans. CM)

The gifts of each season create thresholds and doorways of opportunity for us as the year turns. The circuit of the earth about the sun is like the turas (TU'ras), or revolving walk of a pilgrim about a sacred site: at each point of the circumambulation, there arises a different symbology in the changing weather and in the correspondences of the growing world. As we become more sensitive to the annual turas of these changes, we can become attuned.

When the first spring flowers emerge, the winter may still hold sway, but we sense the time of beginning, we struggle, like the young plants, to bring ourselves over the threshold of emergence. When summer's heat encourages us to leave off our warm clothing, we pass through the threshold of confidence and action. When autumn leaves drift from the trees, we look for the threshold of gathering. When winter fastens its grip on the world, we cross the threshold toward reflection and stillness.

Through every station of the earth's revolution, we pass through a kaleidoscipic variety of moods, expectations, and opportunities. Everyone has p0referred seasons, accepting their gifts with pleasure. Those seasons that we actively dislike may be offering us opportunities to come to terms with aspects of our own annual distress - with depression, impatience, anger, or fear. If we can live each moment of the year as it is happening with attention to the seasonal thresholds and their gifts, we may discover a new resourcefulness that will enrich our lives with special joy.

"Consider the gifts and opportunities that you receive from each season."

Last Quarter Moon

Today the moon moves into the last quarter phase for this lunar cycle - signals us that this cycle is drawing to a close....
.... the keywords for this phase are: relaignment, revision, integration, cleansing.  It is the time in a lunar cycle to take closing action, to follow-up and complete the activities begun at the New phase. During this phase you become aware of what is and is not working with respect to the achievement of your goal for the cycle. The movement is toward integration. Open to your success(s).  MANIFEST YOUR GOAL. Be responsible.

Art: Moon-face 7: Waning Half-Moon by Artist Karin Elizabeth Weiss Ph.D.

Rising in the depth of night, the waning half-moon floats high above in the early light of dawn. Resembling the blade of a battle ax, or the hoof-print of a warrior's steed, it marks the phase when a mission must be completed. It is the point in any cycle where we achieve our aims, or we must let them go. Consequently, it is a time of revolt against limiting beliefs; a rebellion against out-dated ideas. The warrior within helps us discover what we search for, overcome what obstructs our progress, defest what threatens our liberty. The Warrior's moon stands guard, reminding us to prepare ourselves for our own daily skirmishes with life.

09-09-09 -  a magickal looking series of numbers isn't.   Also today is my youngest son's birthday, he turns 30.  I have noticed the theme of Fall is showing up in a number of blogs now but on
a sad note I read where Marion Weinstein passed over yesterday.... September 8th.

The Celtic Spirit essay I posted yesterday in my BlogSpot blog I felt to be a lovely one about the season of Fall....

FALL

"Autumn is a good time for visiting;
During its short days there is work for all...
There are sweet acorns in the high woods,
Cornstalks are kind  over the brown earth."
___ ancient Irish poem of the seasons (trans. CM)

After the labor of the grain harvest, the people of the Celtic world looked forward to a more sociable time together, although they by no means stopped work, This sutumnal time is ful of the bustling prep0aration for winter, a task to which animals and birds still pay serious heed. Without their intensive harvesting and harboring in the storehouses of tree and earth, there would be little to sustain life in a very few weeks.

As the garden begins to look straggly and unkempt, the work is to uproot, to collect seeds from the custering seed-heads, and to dig up the ground in preparation for the winter ahead. Autumn's many-colored intensity begins to deepen and wrap us round as this season makes its royal progress, shouts it long goodbye to the growing time.  Trees lean together in more contemplative coteries, their summer dancing stilled until the strong winds begin, then their leaves will tear loose to be blown about the world in wild jigs and solitary war dances.

There are those who find autumn a time melancholy refelction, a reminder of death and decay; but the world is a wiser place if we attend closely to its turning.  The cycle of our years is annually enriched by the lessons of fall: as students return to school and college, so we can turn to our expansive tutorial of the year's new term in search of maturity, heart's sharing, and the work of our dedicated living.

"Take a walk where you can best appreciate the turning season. As you walk, commune with the spirits of the plants, trees and animals that you encounter and learn from them the message of fall."
[From: "The Celtic Spirit" by Caitlin Matthews)

And in this blog there is a lovely entry on Fall:   http://celticanamcara.blogspot.com/      complete with images of lovely pictures.

And in this blog  http://wyldwytchcraft.blogspot.com/     she writes:  "As the season of change turns into the Season of the Witch, my thoughts move to the changes I will be working on this Winter Season.   What changes do you want to work on? What self-reflection will you be focusing on?"

18th day of the 8th lunar cycle -

A quiet morning outside my window - of course it is Sunday on a holiday weekend.... so there is not the usual weekday rush to get to work, school, etc.
But even the birds are quiet this morning.
And I don't see any peeking of the sunrise between the tree leaves - should have by now.  But then we have had a whole string of clear sunny days,
so I am not surprised.  Changes are bound
to come about.  I read a phrase in my We'Moon datebook this morning - "I was meant to be an old woman."   I feel this is one of those simple sentences
that can pack wallop in meanings.
I feel that at this time in my life - old age - that I am coming into some of my truths.  That I seeing things so much differently and I feel a bit of regret that I
didn't 'know' these things before. But then
I guess we have to build up to recognizing this 'knowing.'   Ahhh, there is beginning to be some sunlight and I can a couple of birds..... maybe it was slightly
misty out there and that is why there
was a delay in the growing light.  You know mists are the Crone's hairs wafting behind Her as she moves along into darkness as the Sun Maiden rises.

The September Full moon, the first of the Harvest Moons, is a time to clean up clutter: physical, emotional or spiritual. The dark and cold are approaching, now is the time to put things in order
and finish tasks and projects.  Mercury Retrograde is closing in on us - here in my part of the Earth it occurs early tomorrow morning at 12:45AM EDST.  So as we approach the Autumn Equinox - Mabon - this advice of finishing things up is good advice.  Also we are in waning half of this lunar cycle - so the energies will be aligned with that activity.  I look around and I see several things that need to tied up and finished.

This promises to be a much better day weather wise than yesterday - I can actually see the rising sun peeking through leaves of
the big maple outside my window.  And in fact it is supposed to be the beginning of a several days of sunshine... maybe not real
warm (in the 70's) but it sure beats what we have been having for the past week or so.

A gloomy Sunday ....

  • Aug. 30th, 2009 at 4:55 PM
witchshoes

It has been a gloomy, rainy Sunday here - the 11th day of this Coll/Hazel lunar cycle.

So what are some of the perks of these kinds of days - you don't have to get dressed, but I did have to put on my old shabby sweater coat
to keep warm with.  The temps have been hovering in the 50's  all day and the occasional stiff wind from the north.. Brrr..  The moon is in
Capricorn and the Sun in Virgo, so we are certainly grounded.  So let's talk about grounding some:

Think of a three-pronged electrical plug, which has the third prong in it to help ground the excess electricity if it builds up. Grounding has many benefits. It renders your physically sturdier and more aware of your environment. If you are naturally jumpy or nervous, ground frequently and observe the effects upon you state of mind and your physical status. Overloading yourself with excess energy can be quite disorienting, and in
extreme cases it can be harmful.  Too many people use just their own personal energy to power spells or rituals, even when they believe  they're
using energy gained from elsewhere. As a result, they end up tired, ill and with their personal energy seriously unbalanced, which can further
affect mental performance and emotional reactions. Getting headaches when you work with energy or perform ritual isn't just by gripping the
muscles around your center too tightly. This type of feeling can also be related to how you're grounded, or how your energy is connected to
the energy of the earth.

There is an immense amount of energy lying within the earth, and proper grounding allows you to drawn upon this reserve. Some people say that
they are selfish or that it's unfair to take energy from the earth; they feel as if they are cheating somehow. Nothing can be further from the truth.
The trace amounts that you may draw upon from the earth make little to no difference to that vast store. Remember, too, that when you ground
to release excess energy, you are putting energy back into the earth. It all evens out in the long run.

The earth is a great neutralizer. No matter what flavor of energy you deposit into it, the energy you draw up will always be pure and untainted. One of the best ways to cleanse a stone or a tool of previous energy it may have collected is to bury it, in either salt or soil. Earth absorbs negative
energy, rendering it neutral and safe for future use.

As a quick review: You do not have to be physically standing on the ground in order to ground your energy. You can do it in a moving vehicle;
you can do it in a high-rise apartment, or in an airplane, or on a ship. The central core of the earth is omnipresent.  Simply think down, and allow
your energy to sink downward until you feel it connect to the energy of the earth. Depending on how you sense energy, you may not have to go down very far before you connect with it. You may not even have to reach the surface of the earth, for instance. Different people have different comfort levels. Some may feel secure grounding close to the surface, while others may prefer to sink deep into the earth. Experiement and ascertain your
optimal grounded sensation.

Well, it's Monday

Today is Moon Day on the old Gregorian calendar - the Day of Remembering and Feeling.... The waxing crescent moon moves into the Fixed Water sign of Scorpio. The moon's transit
through Scorpio is a time of death and rebirth, (not necessarily physical death, just like the Death tarot card does not necessarily mean physical death), but it is a time of intensity,
extremes and heightened sensitivity. It is good for focusing, being sexual, and doing psychic work because of the deep emotions and desires Scorpio brings.  While Patriarchal astrology
paints a grim picture indeed of the Scorpio transit, I find it to be a good time when I can feel the Goddess most intensely, especially the Dark or Crone goddesses. During Scorpio moon
opinions and feelings are intense and penetrating. Strong desirs, especially sexual yearnings run deep with emotions at their peak.  So hang for the next couple of days. The moon will'
leave Scorpio on Wednesday at 2:34PM EDST and later that evening enter the Mutable Fire Sign of Sagittarius.

Even tho I went out and looked at about 9:15PM I still missed seeing the waxing crescent moon but will try again tonight.

4th Day of the 8th Lunar Cycle

It is already four days into this lunar cycle - the moon reaches the Crescent stage today at about 2:00PM and I probably could have seen the waxing crescent night as the skies seemed to have cleared, but I was too lazy to haul myself off the couch...I was in one of my snitty moods.   But I could get another chance tonight as the moon won't set here until around 9:30PM.... hoping to see it.  As usual we have
been having way too much cloud cover and while there was some hot humid weather the past week or so I think when that hurricane passed
up the east coast it sucked up all the warm weather with it.  We are back into the cloudy and cool weather.  Looking at the little pic at the top of this entry, the one of the hazel nuts -- they almost look little boobies nestled in the leaes.  LOL

Crescent Moon:

Phase 2 - CRESCENT
The Crescent phase is Receptive and Deliberating. It is about developing resources to protect and sustain the vision of the New. This phase pertains to the
instinctive body. Intuition, reflex and basic survival mechanisms preserve the imprint established during the New phase. At this stage, a commitment is made
to be responsible for attaining the desired goal.

The energy of this phase is stimulated by the senses of taste, smell and touch. There is a struggle to gather adequate information to support the continued
development of the cycle. Understanding the motivation behind the desire is vital to the function of planning for its fulfillment.

During the Crescent phase, open yourself to information and plan for action. Ask yourself: What need does my goal fulfill? and How can I guarantee the
survival of my vision? Let your instincts guide you. Nourish yourself with your favorite foods. Relax in a bath with essential oils. Allow yourself plenty of hugs.
Review your resources, finding the qualities that will help you thrive.

Following the period of New Moon darkness, a shy smile of moon appears near the western horizon at sunset. Still hidden within Earth's shadow,
the moon at this stage presents a fleeting, tantalizing vision. It brings a phase of instinctive, youthful, unconscious, and irrepressible activity. Thus it
corresponds to the Maiden's passage in our lives-- a time of self-determined realities, untouched by worldly limits; filled with potentialities, as yet
uncorrupted by society's conventional judgments.
